Hailing from Southern California, SUMIKO BRAUN is a filmmaker, educator, writer, and actor best known as surfer girl Deanna in the sci-fi cult classic Sharknado. She recently acted opposite of Michael Ealy on the series Secrets and Lies (ABC) and has previously appeared on Extant (CBS). Sumiko can also be seen in various national commercials for Nike, Samsung, Dodge RAM, Courtyard Marriott, and Powerade. She trained at Howard Fine Acting Studio and Beverly Hills Playhouse, and studied improv at Upright Citizens Brigade.
Sumiko directed Master of the Sky: The Life and Art of Sam Koji Hale, a short documentary following the journey of a mixed race Japanese American puppet filmmaker from Kansas. The film won “Best Documentary” at the Asians on Film Festival of Shorts and premiered at the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival. She also was a 2016 Visual Communications Armed with a Camera Fellowship for Emerging Media Artists participant and directed the dramatic short film Heart of Mind. She produced and acted in the neo-noir thriller This Last Lonely Place, which premiered at the Newport Beach Film Festival and screened at Cannes.
Sumiko currently works as a teaching artist for artworxLA, facilitating workshops on writing, performance, and video production at alternative high schools, and as a videographer and research assistant for Mapping Indigenous Los Angeles at UCLA. She has an M.A. from UCLA and a B.A. from CSU Long Beach, both in Asian American Studies.
